New Rochelle Public Library cardholders may access many of our online reference resources from any home computer. Click on the “Online Resources” tab above for links to resources available for remote access. You’ll most likely need the barcode number found on the back of your New Rochelle Public Library card or other Westchester Public Library card.

Does the library accept donations of books, DVDs, etc.?

The Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library organization accepts donations of books in good condition, CDs, DVDs, audio-tapes, puzzles, and games.  Book donations are accepted inside the Main branch of the Library during regular operating hours. Donations should be placed in the donation box in the lobby; please DO NOT leave books outside and please DO NOT place them in the book return depositories. Please limit your donation to one small box or bag.

PLEASE NOTE: Book donations ARE NOT ACCEPTED at the Huguenot Children’s Library (HCL.) Please DO NOT leave books outside HCL and please DO NOT place LIBRARY books in the Little Free Library outside HCL.  Thank you.

There are some things we DON’T ACCEPT:
• encyclopedias
• textbooks over 2 years old
• cassette and VHS tapes
• dated health or business books
• books that are mildewed, damaged or otherwise in poor condition
Please be considerate of the volunteers who handle the books for the Friends’ Book Sales and Book Store! Donations should not be brought in trash bags, as the materials get damaged. Please do not leave boxes so heavy that the volunteers can’t lift them.

How do I apply for a Library Card?

New Rochelle residents and property owners are eligible for a library card. If you do not live in Westchester, but attend a New Rochelle school or are employed by a New Rochelle business, you are eligible to apply for a New Rochelle Public Library card. Westchester residents not living in New Rochelle should apply for a library card at their local library. Children of any age may apply for their own library card, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with a photo ID. Students in middle school and high school may apply for a card on their own with a current school schedule or school ID.
Simply bring a photo ID with proof of current New Rochelle residency to the library Registration Desk. Residents may use a driver’s license, New York State ID, or photo ID from a consulate or embassy. Otherwise, you may bring in photo ID and two of the following to prove residency: property tax bill, utility bill, receipt or lease, recently canceled mail sent to your name and current New Rochelle address, or documentation of employment in New Rochelle. The library will not retain copies of identification.
You may also apply for a library card online. Fill out this form (English or Spanish.) You will be notified via email when your card is read to pick up. Please bring proof of current New Rochelle residency (as detailed above) to the library Registration Desk to show when you pick up your card.

A non-resident card is issued by the Westchester Library System for an annual fee of $75.00 for anyone not covered above.

How do I reserve an item from another library?

You can borrow any material listed in the catalog and have it delivered to the library of your choice by placing a hold on it, as prompted by the catalog’s instructions.
